Spirometry in biracial children: how adequate are race-based reference equations?
نویسندگان
چکیده
S pirometric reference equations are typically stratified by race because of racial differences in lung function, particularly between black and white individuals, at least in part because of black individuals having a smaller thorax to leg length ratio, and thus smaller lung volumes for a given height, than white individuals. Use of race-based pulmonary function equations is especially problematic in biracial/multiracial individuals, who compose an increasing portion of the US population, as lung physiology may not simply be an average of their composite races; use of race in pulmonary function testing has recently been questioned. To our knowledge, no spirometric reference equations exist for biracial or multiracial individuals. We assessed pulmonary function in biracial (black and white) children and compared spirometric data when children were classified as being black vs white.

RATIONALE To evaluate the appropriateness of spirometric and plethysmographic reference equations in healthy young children according to ethnic origin. METHODS Spirometry data were collated in 400 healthy children (214 Black and 186 White) aged 6-12 years. Of these children, 68 Black and 115 White children also undertook plethysmography. Results were expressed as percent predicted according t...
متن کاملSpirometry reference values for Navajo children ages 6-14 years.
Spirometry is the most important tool in diagnosing pulmonary disease and is the most frequently performed pulmonary function test. Since respiratory disease is the single greatest cause for morbidity and mortality on the Navajo Nation, the purpose of this study was to create new age and race-specific pulmonary nomograms for Navajo children. Five hundred fifty-eight healthy children, ages 6-14 ...

Current guidelines recommend separate spirometry reference equations for whites, African Americans, and Mexican Americans, but the justification for this recommendation is controversial. The authors examined the statistical justification for race/ethnic-specific reference equations in adults in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988–1994) and the Multi-Ethnic Study of ...

Ethnic differences in pulmonary function have been frequently reported. The purposes of this study were to derive equations for the prediction of normative spirometry values for a large population of Persians in Isfahan and compare them to reference values from a White Euro-USA population. Spirometry measurements were obtained from 4,341 randomly selected healthy nonsmoker subjects in Isfahan, ...
